Gwen White is our resident aquatic and marine science expert, with skills that encompass program analysis and development, meeting facilitation, and report writing for issues that range from exotic species prevention and control; management planning for lakes, wetlands, and watersheds; and conservation of biodiversity, habitats, and natural communities.
During 12 years of duty with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, where she was formally recognized for her outstanding service, Gwen oversaw contracts for control of nutrient and sediment inputs to lakes and rivers and assisted in assessing the biological impacts associated with the design and monitoring of wetland restoration, agricultural conservation, and stream bank stabilization projects. She represented the Division of Fish and Wildlife in resolving issues and providing technical input on rule-writing and permitting for recreational and commercial fishing, aquaculture, importation and stocking, aquatic plant control, boating, floodway construction, and public lake management. In the late 1980s, she served with the Peace Corps aquaculture program in Honduras. She has authored or co-authored articles that have appeared in more than 25 peer reviewed publications or technical reports and has given numerous presentations and workshops covering a variety of natural resource issues.
Gwen has developed valuable relationships within the fisheries and aquatics communities. She was a representative on many state and regional government committees that include the Midwest Glacial Lakes Fish Habitat Action Plan, Great Lakes Aquatic Nuisance Species Panel, Indiana Lakes Management Work Group, Indiana Wetland Conservation Technical Advisory Group, Indiana Water Monitoring Council, State Water Quality Standards Nutrient Criteria Technical Advisory Group, and Hoosier Heartland Resource Conservation and Development Council. She is highly active in the American Fisheries Society, where she was a candidate for Society 2nd Vice President and served for five years as the registered parliamentarian for the Management Committee and Governing Board; as president of the Equal Opportunities Section and Indiana Chapter; as a member of the 2010-2014 Strategic Plan Revision Committee and Hutton Scholar Committee; and as chapter representative on the Indiana Land Use Consortium.
Gwen has a doctorate in conservation biology (University of Minnesota), a master’s in zoology (University of Maryland), and a bachelor’s in biology (Goshen College, Indiana).
